Cup Speaker
Assembly
Materials Required
2 Plastic Cups (or plates)
2 Neodium magnets
2m of magnet wire (very fine = 0.1mm)
Strip of paper
Wrap your strip of paper around a pencil or pen
(Don't tape it)
It should be loose enough to slide off after
Measure about 10-15cm of wire
(You must be careful
not to wrap this piece of wire
,
or you will have no end to connect the speaker to the stereo)
Start wrapping the rest of your wire around the pencil with the paper on it
Keep your coil as thin as possible (about 5mm max) in width
Stop wrapping when you have about 10-15cm of wire left
Slide the paper off the pencil
Slide the coil off the paper
(You can unwrap the paper if needed)
Fold a piece of tape over the coil to prevent it from unwinding
Tape you coil to the back of a cup (or plate)
(Make sure you leave the 2 ends of the wire free)
Place a magnet inside the cup (or plate),
and another on the outside, so they stick together
Gently scrape the ends of wire to remove the paint (varnish)
so the wire will conduct electricity
Hook your speaker up to the stereo
Bring your cup with the magnets close to the cup with the coil
Experiement with your new speaker!
Try holding them in different positions
Hold them loose or tight
Try placing the magnets on different objects (a plate, paper, nothing)
Place the magnets on a popsicle stick and hold the stick in your teeth (take the coil off the cup)
