Fire Fight Bot

Course Description
  • Australia is suffering from one of the worst bushfire disasters in its history. 
  • Many animals have died, homes have been lost, and people have died fighting the fires. 
  • Robots can and do save lives! 
  • Robots can go places, and do things humans can’t do, or aren’t safe to do.
  • Students will use 3D printers and a laser cutter to manufacture the parts they need to build their own Fire Fighting Robot!
  • Students will finish the course by testing their robot against a real fire!
  • NOTE: This is a big project and will require 2 terms to complete it (This is Part 1 of 2)

GET READY

Here is a checklist to help you get ready for your first day of class

  • $ Ensure your invoice is paid (email / text us immediately if you did not receive one)
  • Pack Check the Lesson Plan each week to see what you need to bring (see below)

MATERIALS

You need to bring the following materials to every class

  • Design Laptop PC or Mac (tablets will not work)
  • Laptop A mouse is highly recommended
  • Headphones are highly recommended
  •  Pencil
  • Eraser (rubber)
  • Notebook (paper)
  • Ruler
  •  Container (a plastic container or box to keep your project & parts in - about shoebox size)

DesignBuild 2) Fire Plan - Planning

DesignBuild 3) Cardboard Tank Body - Prototypes

Week #

This week you will build a cardboard protype of the robot tank base you planned/designed last week.

You will learn some structure engineering as you learn to make a weak construction material like cardboard, strong!

DesignBuild 4) Inkscape - CAD Design

Week #

Laser Cut

We will begin to learn how to use CAD (Computer Aided Design) so we will be ready to design our tanks in Inkscape in a couple of weeks.

DesignBuild 5) Drive Wheels - Prototypes

Week #

This week you will keep working on your cardboard prototype. We will focus on the drive wheels this week.

  • Build 2 drive wheels for your tank robot
  • Test the water pump

DesignBuild 6) Wheels & Caterpillar Track - Prototypes

DesignBuild 7) Cardboard Test - Prototypes

This week you get to add your motors to your tank, and make it move!

Then, to get a fundamental understanding of how to control the tank, we are going to try to race the tanks through a maze using only your batteries, wires, and motors – absolute manual mode!

  • Make your motors spin!
  • Take your robot for a test drive!

DesignBuild -) ONLINE ONLY - Lasercut Tank - CAD Design

Week #

Laser Cut

After having worked out the details (and problems) with your design in the cardboard prototype phase, you’re now ready to proceed to your final design.  You will learn to draw your design in CAD using Inkscape. 

Mr. Dash will then laser-cut your design so it is ready for you to receive next week!

 

Work at Home/Online

You get your laser-cut parts today! You will have this class to work on assembling all your parts, and making everything work mechanically.
