DIY Drone

 

This term you will Design, Build, Fly, and Keep your own Drone!

This is NOT a kit that you simply assemble. 
You are going to learn to do the Engineering and Design work!

Learn how to use a 3D Printer to create the parts you will need!

Learn to make precision measurements with calipers.

You can design and 3D Print a Lego compatible seat for a Lego Drone Pilot!

Get started by learning how motors work, then help your engineering team use a motor and a 3D printer to make a flying UFO!

Here is a checklist to help you get ready for your first day of class

MATERIALS

You need to bring the following materials to every class

  • Design Laptop PC or Mac (tablets will not work)
  • Laptop A mouse is highly recommended
  • Headphones are highly recommended
  • Pencil
  • Eraser (rubber)
  • Notebook (paper)
  • Ruler

DesignBuild 1) Design it! Spin it! - *Motors & CAD*

Week #

Drone

This week you will learn about motors and circuits, as you try the Motor Challenges
Then we will begin learning how to design our own parts for 3D Printing using a CAD program called MatterControl!

What to Bring

 

DroneChallenges

  1. Make the motor spin
  2. Make it spin faster
  3. Make it spin backward (find 2 ways to do this)
  4. Add a switch to turn the motor on and off
  5. Add a second switch: The motor should only turn on when switch #1 AND switch #2 are both ON
  6. Change the second switch: The motor should only turn on when either switch #1 OR switch #2 are ON
  7. ADVANCED: Use two switches so switch #1 makes the motor spin clockwise, and switch #2 makes it spin anitclockwise
    (Don't turn on both switch at the same time - the motor can't go both directions at the same time and it creates a short-circuit)

Design 3) UFO Challenge - *3D Printing & Motor Challenge*

Week #

DroneThis week you will join a team and see if you can design, 3D Print, and build a flying UFO toy! 
Once you’ve built it you will see if you can use a motor to launch it high into the sky!

Challenge

Can your team build a UFO Flying Disk Toy that is launched into the sky after being spun very fast by a motor?

DesignBuild 4) Drone Motor Holder - *3D Printing*

Week #

DroneThis week you will start work on your own drone!  The first part you will design will be your motor holder.

This week you will recieve your drone kit!

  1. Measure one of your drone motors
  2. Make a holder (tube shaped)
  3. The inside of the tube needs to be the perfect size (tolerance) for the motor, this may take a few tries.
  4. Create a short support arm off the motor holder (only 10mm for now)
  5. Print and test your holder

Week #

DroneYou now have the rest of the term to design, print, and build your drone! 
Everyone will work at their own pace.  You can work as a team if you wish.
